Up to half of all women experience weakness in both the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy and up to a third still have a tummy gap at eight weeks post-birth. This can cause instability or poor core strength leading to women developing pelvic or back pain or bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. This can create instability and weak core strength which results in altered transfer load, back pain, pelvic pain, and bladder and bowel weakness. A Mummy MOT® helps women avoid these distressing and often embarrassing symptoms.
A Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. And if they’re not, then we can provide you with exercises and treatment to help in your recovery and to return to exercise safely.
Having a baby doesn't mean you have to put up with having live with the physical affects of pregnancy and birth.
A complete physio-led check up involving a full MSK assessment and advice around syptoms and concerns regarding hormones, diet, bladder and or bowel issues, pelvic floor and giving you a greater understanding around this new chapter in you life.
Pregnancy is a time full of change and we can help make it a bit easier. You may not be able to do the exercise you did before, or maybe you want to continue exercising but unsure how to safely. A Mum-To-Be MOT assess your body throughout pregnancy and helps you cope with the physical demands. As well as a full MSK assessment we advice you on how to prepare for labour and birth, how to manage pregnancy related symptoms such as Sciatica or back pain, and help you to safely exercise with a individualised programme tailored to you.
We offer a wide range of services and treatments which may be included in your asessments and follow ups such as:

Recovering from a caesarean usually takes longer than recovering from a vaginal delivery, therefore, we suggest you book a Mummy MOT following a c-section from 8 weeks postnatal.
During the Mummy MOT you discuss your delivery, offer a full postural screen, pelvic floor muscle assessment, abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation, and internal examination (if you wish), discuss and examine your C-section scar, and screen for bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction.
Your practitioner will offer a safe environment, educate and advise on activities, lifting the baby, or pushing your buggy. After the assessment, you will be given a written report on the findings of your assessment and a bespoke rehabilitation programme to fit your lifestyle and get back to your exercise goals.
The same as a postnatal full assessment but also focusing on education and advice surrounding exercise in pregnancy, labour preperation techniques such as perineal massage and managing common pregnancy complaints such a swelling and sciatica.
Mum-to-be MOT® will also include dicussing post birth recovery and postnatal support.
At Jessica Harrison Physiotherapy, we specialize in helping you recover from injuries and chronic pain, so you can get back to doing the things you love. Our team of experienced physiotherapists offer a range of services, including acupuncture, manual therapy, and more.
